Since it was released in October 2021, the free word game, Wordle, has grown to a daily player base of 2.7 million players. Originally created by Josh Wardle for his partner, Wordle is a game that gives you 6 tries to guess a 5 letter word, but after each guess, the letters you used will be marked correct, in the wrong spot, or not in the word at all.
The game's steady rise to popularity is made more impressive by (and perhaps in part due to) its lack of ads, account creation, or personal data collection of any kind. Despite the nonexistent price tag, Wardle has said he feels a sense of responsibility to the players and especially enjoys having provided a way for folks to stay in touch despite the ongoing COVID pandemic.
Coming In Hot: NYT Buys Wordle for undisclosed price in the low-seven figures.
