UAW President Shawn Fain accused General Motors and Stellantis of "enabling" violence against striking union workers by allegedly hiring "scab contractors as he highlighted three instances of violence and intimidation towards striking union workers, notably a hit-and-run at a GM facility in Flint, Michigan, which left five individuals injured.
As the impact of the UAW strikes are yet to be realized, a new Wall Street Journal article highlights the shifting dynamics in the auto retail sector from a sellers to a buyers market. As inventory and choice have expanded, and consumers are being more selective, third party car-listing platforms like CarGurus and Cars.com are poised for significant growth opportunities.
Today is National Coffee Day, and a recent WalletHub report has brewed up a ranking of the best US cities for coffee lovers in 2023. The rankings are based on a mix of metrics, including coffee consumption and establishment counts, the list identifies the top destinations for aficionados of the beloved beverage.
Paul Daly: 0:27Back in the Studio always feel so good coming off a full crazy week of a soda can we ever UAW update third party renaissance and Kyle the best cities for coffee today? surprise ending on this one they stop and stay when they see me so I did not look it up. Went up on me watch 14 Oh no, tell me did you didn't look at the cities yet did you? Good. Good. Don't Don't look at the cities yet. I mean the cities in the article are fine, but number one we got to talk about this.
Kyle Mountsier: 1:00
We got talking about that.
Paul Daly: 1:01
Yo man. Are both both our voices are like rocking a full full fledged 85 Hey, Jimmy,
Kyle Mountsier: 1:06
hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. We got fixed this give me a little jiggle on the old mic cable or something for me real quick because my sound
Paul Daly: 1:14
bad. Yeah, it's rough. Come on, man. Figure this out. I sound great. My own ears.
Kyle Mountsier: 1:22
Fancy. Maybe it's my own ears.
Paul Daly: 1:26
Nathan, Nathan, how am I sounded.
Unknown: 1:28
It's definitely a little it's definitely it's definitely weird. And it's probably from your broadcasts or the computer so
Kyle Mountsier: 1:37
like podcasts This is what happens when you podcast everyday you just bring the producer on and talk about road casters and stuff. You know what I mean? And so yeah, hey, look, we've been creating content all week and like the Tech has gotten so well. We had to have a little road caster issue coming to the end of the week, you know? And pause if you're watching the video he's he's on mute. He's not really
Paul Daly: 2:01
I'm back I reset my road caster sound
Kyle Mountsier: 2:05
now let's go let's get into a pod There we go. All right. All right,
Paul Daly: 2:08
we gotta go look right after this. We're heading in to the All Things use cars clubhouse room with David law, we're going to treat it like in a solo con debrief. So you get to have the clubhouse app. Or if you want to get the clubhouse app Quick Search all things use cars, Come jump in the room with us. And we'll we'll jam on a soda kind of a little bit. Just amazing time. We've talked about it several times. I don't want to, we don't have a lot of time to get into. But let me just say that the community is on fire straight.
Kyle Mountsier: 2:36
He's on fire what they're talking about, like they it's not our content is their content. It's what these people are doing on the ground every single day to serve customers and their employees. And they're doing incredible stuff.
Paul Daly: 2:50
So yeah, like anybody else want a 91% or higher retention rate? anybody? Anybody out there, okay. Okay, we got the secrets, we got the secrets, we're gonna be talking more about it releasing a lot of content from a solo con. But if you look around on LinkedIn and see some of the people that were there, people were like life changing 72 hours. That's literally the feedback. So Oh, but for now we're kind of back to the real word for a minute. So wrong one. That's the role and actually, for the UAW president Shafi now as accused General Motors instances of quote enabling violence, against striking union workers by allegedly hiring scab contractors as he highlighted three instances of violence and intimidation, touring towards striking union workers, notably a hit and run at a GM facility in Flint, Michigan, with left five individuals injured. So the Wall Street Journal reported that GM plans to use salaried workers for parts shipments, so they're trying to like to the sell. That's how you labor strikes work, right salary, people start to pick up some of the slack whilst the Lantis says they've stored a month's worth of inventory for various parts and other things. And you're using a third party to deliver those they have a 30 day supply actually, of parts. So, you know, they denied hiring replacement workers as accused, you know, and they said, No, we haven't hired any. Maybe they haven't. I mean, I don't know. And then some some actually salaried workers have crossed the picket lines to do their job. And you know, some of these companies are saying actually, the salaried workers that are just coming to work because they want to keep working. They're getting harassed by the striking workers. And so, you know, GM emphasized their commitment to safety. And this hit and run was a cleaning contractor. I believe that was having trouble getting through the picket lines because they were blocking and Officer James like, hey, none of that. If you can't get into work, just call us and we'll help you safely navigate that. Shawn fain set today this morning 10am To announce potentially some more strike locations.
Kyle Mountsier: 4:56
Wow. Here it comes.
Paul Daly: 4:58
He goes bow
Kyle Mountsier: 5:01
I mean, drama like sounds like the place I can't even it's like CSI New York meets daytime drama meets Otto. It's the weirdest time.
Paul Daly: 5:13
I know well, it's like kind of the it's literally legitimately the opposite of our experience at a sort of,
Kyle Mountsier: 5:20
right. It's like you come from a soda con everybody's collaborating, considering each other and understanding what it takes to be different and set ourselves apart as the automotive industry and then you got Womp womp Ah
Paul Daly: 5:33
yeah, okay. All right, we're gonna move on. Speaking of moving on, segue. Okay, so, you know, as as the impact is yet to be realized of the strike. And the Wall Street Journal article highlights the shifting dynamics in the retail sector automotive shifting from a seller's market to a buyers market. We've been talking about this. It's cool to see I love the perspectives of kind of automotive outsiders on what's going on inside automotive. So I think it's always kind of fun. And so basically as inventory shortage choices, growing consumers being more selective third party sites like CarGurus and cars.com, are showing some significant growth. So obviously, now that this is a major research point, or consumers, these third parties and an equity analysts at UBS reports that cars.com is claiming about 40,000 us dealerships using using the site why CarGurus is over about 24,000 dealerships at the end of 2022 and last week's earnings call CEO of cars, Alex Vetter, good friend said dealers returning to their platform to give extended or increased exposure to the vehicles that are moving slower. Now that consumers have more choice. One dealer that talked to this UBS analyst said that 50% of their overall marketing budget is being spent on third parties.
Kyle Mountsier: 6:55
That's anecdotal. That's so anecdotal that like I don't I don't want that deal. Right?
Paul Daly: 7:01
Well, well, here's the thing, too. It was like, one dealership, I was like, it could have been an independent that like, just doesn't have any could
Kyle Mountsier: 7:08
be right doesn't have a marketing team or an agency or anything like that. And that's where they list their inventory. You know, I will say, half of the 40,000 US dealerships, obviously, there's a lot of inclusion with independent dealers listed on on these sites. But it stands to reason that customers are still interested in higher funnel research and shopping behavior. And I say this to people all the time we get we get upset in the industry, especially as dealer retailers about third parties, and the way that we shop in the rest of the world, right. Think about just Google Flights. Google Flights is a third party listing site. Yes. Right. But everybody uses it Expedia. Like all of your Airbnb ease, and and, and VRBO. Those, those are third party listing sites. And this is just it's the way the world operates in the way that consumers shop. And so you want an aggregated experience. Yeah, exactly. I think there's opportunities for them. But yeah, yeah.
Paul Daly: 8:11
That's always fun to see how everybody else is taking a look at it. Hey, today is National Coffee Day. I need more coffee on National Coffee Day.
Kyle Mountsier: 8:22
For sure. We got it, we got this WalletHub report. There's a ranking of the best US cities for coffee lovers in 2023. There, the rankings are based on a mix of metrics, including coffee consumption, establishment counts, and even things like, you know, whether or not they hold a National Coffee Day. So we're gonna list
Paul Daly: 8:44
the at all they consulted. Kyle, for the, for the ranking criteria.
Kyle Mountsier: 8:49
Yeah, the ranking criteria isn't really based on the coffee. It's much more based on the like the per capita metrics and and dollars per coffee metrics. So you know, we'll see, but we're gonna go in reverse order on some of the top list here. So, starting with I think there's number 20. Number Number 20. So we got Dallas, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Boston, Denver, Long Beach, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Miami, San Diego, Pittsburgh, top
Paul Daly: 9:20
10 Pittsburgh when he didn't see that coming. What
Kyle Mountsier: 9:23
New Orleans? Oakland, Austin, Tampa. Maybe that's Honolulu, Orlando, Florida. Then these these two very, very clear. Seattle, Washington Portland, Oregon. Like, okay,
Paul Daly: 9:39
what's the number one because you know, you know, right now, what's the number one especially start counting airports because there's like three insane coffee spots in the Nashville airport. But the number one is San Francisco.
Kyle Mountsier: 9:52
Yes. Which it's just it's a big birthplace the West Coast obviously.
Paul Daly: 9:59
It's obvious do now So is that even on this list?
Kyle Mountsier: 10:01
Yeah, I did look it's number 53. Oh gosh. Which makes a lot of sense. There's not a lot of Starbucks in Nashville like we just should be at low prices. Our prices for coffee are higher than the majority of the US because we have a higher cost of living growing in consumer goods. And so hey, I get it. I get it. But still, some of the best coffee shops in the country are absolutely a mash.
Paul Daly: 10:28
I love it. JENNA SMITH just comments on the show that International Coffee Day is actually Sunday. So National Coffee day is today but we have a whole weekend of celebrating the beverage that we all love. When it is made properly in the right spot whether or not you can get it Hey, join us in the All Things use car room. Have an amazing weekend. We'll see y'all tomorrow morning's podcast. Just go get some done
