Tech developed by MIT professor Silvio Micali played center stage in a recent marketing campaign that killed the lights in Time Square for one hour. Algorand, a carbon-neutral crypto mining company, turned off the lights to display a powerful and tangible image of current cryptocurrency practices' impact on the environment.
How different could it be? Times Square saved 23.4 billion joules of energy in one hour of darkness. That amount is enough to run Bitcoin network operations for 1.5 seconds or about six transactions. On the Algorand blockchain, the same amount of energy would power 350 million transactions and two weeks of network operations.
