Over The Air Updates: Rewards and Risks

Rivian announced a software update that increases the max range of its R1T (now 328 miles) and R1S (now 321 miles). Following the over-the-air update, the vehicles increased ranges by 14 and 5 miles, respectively.

But what is the cost! Fans are dismayed that the online ordering tool has updated the range, but shed some optional features. Customers can no longer select a spare tire, cargo crossbars, or a tent in the configurator.

Life Lesson: You can't download a bigger battery, but you can download less energy-hungry software versions. Do you have any “Energy-hungry software” in your life? 🤔

Honda is getting started on its over-the-air project by adding Google Build-In to its 11th generation of vehicles. Google Build-In is an automotive platform that ties an owner's vehicle into the broader world of their Google account.

Coming soon. Starting with the 2023 Accord, Honda vehicles will have access to Google's Maps, Store, and Assistant. The software will open the vehicles to receive additional functions even multiple years after the sale.

People who once said, "You won't be able to Google the answer in the real world," get wronger every day.

While OTA updates could mean growth and revenue, some have pointed out that the technology is immature and opens new questions about security in the "Supercomputer on wheels" era.

With "software-defined" vehicles becoming more common in the next 5-10 years, the risk of software issues leading to inaccurate speedometer readings, inactive features, or even malicious  network breaches only becomes more real.

"Hey, I'm going to be late... no, nothing's wrong, the car got hacked again and drove me to Canada... yeah sure, I'll bring you something nice... ok, bye." 🇨🇦
